Guatemala and Costa Rica to 2007 Pan American Games
After only two matches of a triangular Futsal competition between Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Panama, it was clear who would advance to the 2007 Pan American Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Guatemala defeated Panama rather handily (12-3), on Wednesday. The second match, on Thursday, between Costa
Rica and Panama saw Costa Rica pick up a win with a bit of a closer score line, 7-4. The third match to be played today will be between Costa Rica and hosts Guatemala to determine the winner.
Guatemala and Costa Rica will represent CONCACAF along with the USA and Cuba who respectively took first and second in the CONCACAF Futsal championship. These four teams will advance to the eight team tournament to be played this summer. The four teams from CONMEBOL are Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Ecuador. The Brazilianl and Argentine Futsal teams placed third and fourth respecitvely in 2004’s FIFA Futsal World Cup in Chinese Taipei.
This is the first year that Futsal will be included in the Pan American Games.
