No More Ben Haim

March 23, 2007
During the January transfer window there was speculation of Chelsea looking to purchase Israeli stand-out Tal Ben Haim for a mere three million pounds or so. As it was, the Whites had little depth in the back and really couldn’t afford to essentially give away an all star for crumbs. Now, instead of giving away an all star for crumbs, we’re giving him away, period. Gone. For free. No more Tal Ben Haim. It has been understood for some time that Ben Haim wanted out. It came down to a matter of a paycheck, and as Big Sam said “We can’t afford Tal anymore.” I guess you can’t blame him, but it’s still frustrating to see a top class defender like Ben Haim walk away because our chairman won’t throw down some more cash. But we can still be bitter about his money grubbing desire. It is assumed that Ben Haim will be picked up by one of the Big Four as he has the quality to play for them, and they have the funds to pay for him.

Tal Ben Haim will almost certainly be starting in the back for Israel when they take on England in Israel in a Euro 2008 qualification map. As Ben Haim sees it the loser of this match will fail to qualify, and although England is the favorite to win, he feels like giving them a run at it.

Vaz Té and Michalik Loaned

March 10, 2007

New Slovakian signing Lubomir Michalik has been loaned out to Championship Side Leeds United.  It’s only a month and he will return April ninth.  Michalik signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the Whites during the January transfer window, and this is really the first time his name has popped up since.  Hopefully Michalik will be ready to play in the back when Ben Haim almost surely leaves in the summer.

The other White just recently announced to be on loan is Ricardo Vaz Té.  Vaz Té has also been loaned for a month to Championship Side Hull City.  Undoubtedly get Vaz Té some first team expierence, and some playing time, but many a Whites supporter will tell you Vaz Té’s disappearance leaves us a little shallow up front.  Realistically, Vaz Té probably couldn’t have gotten that time and expierence playing with the Whites if only Big Sam would recognize Stelios’ recent poor showings.  Now in the seventieth minute when we’re behind, and Stelios looks like garbage, who do we have to put up front?

New Contracts Galore

March 7, 2007
Nothing really new if you read about at all.  Toronto FC finally picked up Connor Casey, although they had to use the first allocation.  Not all together a bad move, but it would have been much nicer if they got to use the sixth as opposed to the first allocation spot.

TFC also picked up Doorman Jon Busch, formerly of the Columbus Crew,  through the waiver draft.  The crew had dropped him due to salary cap issues, and in turn Toronto picked him up essentially as their third keeper.  Their second keeper, Tomer Chencinski, was signed earlier in the week.  Chencinski finished playing for Fairleigh Dickinson in 2006.  It’s also been speculated that TFC have signed Andrea Lombardo, although no offical word yet.

In other news, across the pond:

Bolton Captain Kevin Nolan has prolonged his contract with Bolton for another four years.  This is probably a good thing as Nolan has had some decent seasons in his past.  However, if Nolan continues the recent form he is in, he may begin to lose favor with the Superwhite faithful quickly.  It’s been reported by some that Bolton have their eye on, and are in the lead for Crystal Palace youngster Tom Soares.  Soares, playing in the midfield would most likely be brought in to replace an aging Gary Speed.

In exit news at Bolton, Big Sam has had to quench the idea that fan favorite El-Hadji Diouf is going to leave the Whites for Athletico Madrid in Spain.  Unfortunately Big Sam didn’t necessarily say Diouf isn’t going, he just said he’s not going for six-million pounds.

Henrik Pedersen stated that he is willing to leave the Whites if the gaffer continues to play him in a left-back spot.  This news is probably considered by some to be almost as good as news that Nicky Hunt is departing (which he is not).  Mind you, Pedersen is out of contract in the summer, and said he is willing to leave if he get’s another offer, unfortunately, he probably won’t get another lucrative offer, and he will somehow manage to extend his contract and suck valuable money from the Whites.

Bolton Pick-up Much Needed Defender

February 20, 2007

With Tal Ben Haim out of contract at the end of the season and most likely departing from the Whites, it was imperative that Big Sam found a defender to cover the void in the defensive backs.  The Wanderers would still have the Abdoulaye twins, as experienced defensive backs, but the rest would most likely be unaccustomed to life in the Premier League.

The Wanderers have been chasing César Martín Villar for some time now, as Big Sam first started asking about him while he was at Deportivo de la Coruña.  Unfortunately for Big Sam, he was unable to procure César’s services until now only after he feel out of favor at Levante and had his contract canceled at the end of January.

César has captured many accolades in his footballing history, including the Copa del Rey and the Supercup.  He has also been capped twelve times by the Spanish National team, and looks to clearly bring some experience and skill to the Wanderers.

César’s recent past has seen him pick up injuries after injuries limiting his play and reducing his chances on the national squad.  This time he is out of contract and seemed to throw himself at Big Sam and the Whites completely disregarding Alan Pardew and Charlton’s  desires to sign him.  Perhaps César is looking to Big Sam for a dose of career revival.  No matter to the Wanderers, as long as he doesn’t injure as easily as Quentin Fortune he is a grand addition to the squad.

Unfortunately, he has only signed a contract until the end of the season, with hope that he will sign on for another season or two if the next few weeks work out for him and the Whites.

Dallman to Bolton?

February 18, 2007

"Who?" You ask.  Matthew Dallman, twenty-one year old, five-foot-five right-sided striker/midfielder from University of Portland has apparently spent the last week training with the Bolton Reserves.  Unfortunately for Dallman he is a bit short, however it has been noted that his character and quickness make up for his diminutive stature.

Dallman was a stand-out player at University of Portland, and he also spent some time playing for Bradenton Athletics a premier development team out of Florida.   While playing with Bradenton  he played in fourteen games, logging just under 1,200 minutes of playing time, scoring two goals, assisting on seven and amassing only six fouls.

Apparently, Dallman does not appear very concerned about getting a contract offer from Big Sam as he has noted to the media he has other trials set up across Europe, with German side Bayern Munich among them.  Dallman has some ties with Europe as both of his fathers parents hail from England, while his great-grandfather, Roderick Welsh, played for Portsmouth and Port Vale.

If Dallman is signed by the Whites, he would not be the first American to play for Big Sam.  There is another American on the team in Johann Smith, who despite making his debut this season, was loaned to Football League One team Carlisle United F.C.
